Tresa Varner

Tresa Varner is an artist and educator living in Pittsburgh, PA. Her work explores the American ideal of individualism from both a personal and contemporary feminist perspective. Points of reference are essays and journals from 19th Century American Renaissance writers, poets, and artists, as well as present-day personal blogs. Varner’s main medium is photographic silkscreen and relief printing, but her approach to printmaking is that of a painter. Varner rarely make editions of her prints, concentrating more on creating unique prints that involve many layers. No two prints are ever alike. Her practice is heavily reliant on the infinite ways color and form interact to create and redefine meaning. Varner has exhibited her work locally, nationally, and most recently in Chile. In addition to her work in Pittsburgh, Varner has attended numerous artist residencies and lead community art projects in Chile, Brazil, Russia, Hong Kong, and China.
